I used to write. I used to write a lot.
Not Exactly As Planned
Cliche but true, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I grew up. This was pretty obvious to my parents when they were surprised with a bill letting them know I had signed up for a second degree. Aside from the sticker shock, there was also surprise that I wanted to supplement my business degree with a film degree of all things. Over the next four years, my schedule would require me to context switch from finance classes to photography labs. I would be denied entry into the business fraternity because I wasn’t “professional enough” and was never cool enough to hang with the amateur filmmakers. There was one constant though — I worked in the business school’s career center with the hopes that, one day, it would help me get a job.
Near the end of my college career, I got dressed up in a suit for an interview. It was scratchy and uncomfortable, but I ignored it. I thought, “Today’s the day I’m going to land a job at Nielson.” It would be perfect. Nielson was all about an area I loved (film) that required the marketing acumen I acquired in business school.
